Say “let’s make some little doves” to someone in Spanish, and you may soon be making some popcorn (palomitas de maiz—little doves of corn). In Episode 10 of my America the Bilingual podcast, I chat with two native Spanish speakers from Mexico, my producer Fernando Hernandez and friend Mario Bravo, about favorite dichos—those sayings in different languages that make the language sing.
Have a listen to our conversation. Then I’d love to have you share with me your favorite saying from another language you know, or admire, or aspire to.
And if you’d like to learn about the history of the Spanish language, including why it’s so wonderfully easy to spell, I recommend The Story of Spanish by Jean-Benoit Nadeau and Julie Barlow.
